  6. Sunny made the best point. This is how gentrification happens. Big HQs come to town, forcing out all the low income people that’s been living there for years. Most of the time they don’t even hire the people that live in the neighborhoods. It’s usually people that live out of town that are offered jobs at these high level cooperations. Most of these jobs require people to have managerial/executive level experience, which a lot of people in that Queens neighborhood do not have. NYC will soon be a city for the rich. They brought up Harlem as an example. The rent in Harlem is beyond ridiculous now. Half the people that used to live there have moved further up into the Bronx or out of NYC. Same thing happened in Williamsburg Brooklyn.

  8. Meghan doesn't understand NYC is not Las Vegas. She's comparing apples and oranges. Displacement of locals is the very unfortunate consequence of this type of corporate move.

  9. Thank you sunny for breaking it down. Because corporations should invest in the local people by training them into positions especially if the company is not paying taxes. I think that the only tax incentives companies should receive

  14. You can't just train local people to be engineers, programmers, project managers, etc. Those positions requires people with educations and skills so that they can immediately be productive once hired. What Sunny is forgetting is that local businesses like eateries, dry cleaners, the corner grocery, etc. will all benefit from the new employees moving into the area.

  17. Sunny made an amazing point if they were going to be receiving three billion in incentives and not paying taxes there should have been an agreement that say 65% of the jobs had to be filled by locals and not people that Amazon brought in. These developments should be about lifting local workers out of poverty and not driving them out of their neighborhoods buy raising property values.

  20. The reason why then people are in low-income housing is because they never went to school never learned how to read never learn how to write can't even spell their name if they would actually go to school and learn something they wouldn't be in low housing apartments then they could get a job at Amazon and make $150,000 a year they want to sit there and cry that they're being pushed out but it's their fault because I never went to school and I'm sure they have schools there they cried because nobody will give my job because it can't read can't write their name can't fill out an application so they want us to cry for them or what do they want us to do for them it's their fault they're in that predicament to begin with.

  26. The only one who gets it is sunny. Gentrification is only good for those that look to benefit. And it's definitely not the community that's there. People are tired of being pushed out of their homes so others can come in and benefit off of it. The crazy part is most don't have to deal with it or see it because it doesn't affect them.

  28. I work for Amazon. It’s a a catch 22. I have changed so much since I started and have learned a great deal about the company, but Sunny is correct. The jobs that HQ has are VERY different from the ones they offer at the fulfillment centers. Joy was thinking about the FCs, Sunny was right on the money, it would be directors of what not, and eastern vp of customer obsession. People like myself and others I work with at Amazon, would not be able to promote to those jobs. Trust me, I’ve been working hard for four years for middle management and even that seems unattainable at times Lol. 👻

  30. It was a HEADQUARTERS not a distribution center. It was 25,000 jobs and none the people who want the job could even get the job. It was a good idea but wouldn't help the people intended. Still the headquarters has to go somewhere. It's still jobs. But framing it to help low income ppl was a lie.

  32. Sunny… You spoken all kinds of truths today… I can't believe there was push back when talking about the Amazon situation moving into Queens. You were absolutely right about how these companies come in and push low income people out but these trust fund babies are all about "they make the neighborhoods better" not giving a care about the people who have lived there in Queensbridge or Ravenswood or Lefrack City all their lives and now will be pushed out because they can no longer afford their rent. Thank you Sunny, thank you for being a voice of reason. Thank you for speaking to what real people are going through in real life and dealing with without a nest egg or a rich family to fall back on. Thank you Sunny Hostin, you need your own show… I'm over this set up. That needed to be 8 minutes of logic not 4 minutes and 4 more minutes of stupidity.

  34. With big companies come also oppertunities. Who builts the building ? – extra new jobs Who cleans the offices ? – extra new jobs ? If the employees go outside for a sandwich or lunch ? – extra foodlocations – extra new jobs ?
Where they going to live ? – in new appartements and houses or buy and rent – extra tax income .
When they need an uber or taxi to their office ? – extra new jobs
Most of these companies want a nice surrounding so they will invest in parks and the area to make it nice for everyone.
Offcourse they recruit high end people but, the city can request to educate or hire a precentage from NY and invest in local communities. For Amazon would be a win win. They don t need to move people from all over the place and safe them money. They could invest into a codingschool to educate their future employees. So NY…hope it still works out for you as I believe it is a great City.

  35. Sunny is right. Amazon coming in would have driven out a majority of the people who currently live there. It’s called gentrification. The rich getting richer and more comfortable, while the poor don’t get pulled up – they get pushed out.

  36. They need ppl on the panel with business degrees, it's not the responsibility of the company to train ppl… that you can say is the government's job. New York just lost out on a big opportunity and that's that.

    Reply
  37. Amazon can't train people to become engineers. They have to attend college for that. Jobs bring other jobs also.
