Using Water When Paint Polishing: When and Why ATA 207 – NYC Video

This episode is part of the ATA 207 series where we discuss the use of supplemental wetting agents or “water spritzing” on paint or pad while polishing. The myth is “using water dilutes the cutting ability of the abrasives.” This is false. There are 2 times to use a SWA during polishing. 1. When there is an abundance of abrasive on your pad and you want to pull them back out of the foam/microfiber and put them back into use on the paint. 2. When you are polishing finicky or “haze prone” paint and are only using 1/4 pea size drops on your paint and need to spread the abrasive around the pad completely. Adding a mist of water will help the polish migrate throughout the pad in this instance. Hope this clears up the confusion. Enjoy! -Larry

  3. Just for academic purpose, what will happen if I add water to a compound or polish? By diluting an aggressive compound, will it reduce it's aggressiveness as the abrasive content for a certain amount of material is reduced.

  4. Just show the whole video don’t overthink it. A 32 min video really is that hard to watch. I think most people interested in this will rather a longer more in-depth video than a shorter one.

  6. If you're so crazy about detailing, why do you use tap water with an extremely high TDS (metals and dirt) instead of distilled with a TDS of 0.0 (clean and purified)?

  16. I love this because it’s a great tip for a budget detailer as well, less is always more! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and you should definitely make longer videos, I know that most people that watch videos rarely exceed 10mins but the people that watch your channel would easily watch 30+ minute videos because we understand how much goes into the job😀
