Every farmer kept sheep, and there was spin-ning-wheels and a loom in every house till long afterthe time I was married. In the fall, father was in thehabit of building a boat and loading it with potatoesand apples and other produce and taking his loaddown the river to sell. Sometimes hed go as far asNew Orleans. Hed dispose of his produce andthen of his boat, and after that hed buy sugar andcoffee and whatever we needed and come back on asteamer. The country was full of wild game then. Iveseen a deer swim the Hio River myself, and Ive seenwild pigeons light on one of our big oak trees so thicktheyd break the limbs. There was ten gangs of wildgeese then to one we have now. Even if a man wasonly goin to his next neighbors, hed take his gun andshot-pouch along, and he was moren likely to bringback some game. You could always have deer meator bar meat if you wanted to take the trouble to goout and shoot it. Once when father was away a barcome and burst open the kitchen door in the night,
