In August 2018, FDNY Rescue 2 responded to a supermarket fire in Brooklyn. Heavy fire engulfed the first floor, smoke was billowing from three floors of apartments above, and the lobby was filled with screaming, self-evacuating residents. Lt. Thomas Daly led his team to the second floor to search an apartment for trapped occupants. Firefighter Edward Dailey searched a second floor apartment filled with fire, and found two unconscious occupants. As Engine 231 directed water into the second floor window from the street below, Firefighter Dailey shielded the injured people, and then worked with Ladder 111 to remove one person by the tower ladder bucket. He removed the second victim from the apartment to the public hallway. Lt. Daly searched another area of the apartment, located and removed one person, then worked with Firefighter Dailey and fellow members to remove an additional person from an apartment immersed in clutter, smoke, and a growing fire that was burning through the floor. For their dedication and bravery that led to the removal of multiple occupants under great personal risk, the Shelly Rothman Memorial Medal will be awarded to Lieutenant Thomas Daly, and the Bella Stiefel Medal will be awarded Firefighter Edward Dailey, at the 2019 FDNY Medal Day Ceremony.
